During the first days and weeks after childbirth, moms and babies may require all kinds of urgent or specialist care, from treatment in the neonatal intensive care unit, to consultations with audiologists, paediatricians, and more.
Dedicated mother-and-child units bring these services under one roof, where all members of staff, from nurses and administrators to doctors, are experienced in giving new families the care and compassion they need.
Mediclinic has mother-and-child units at Mediclinic Constantiaberg, Mediclinic Stellenbosch, and Mediclinic Cape Town, the only private hospital in the Western Cape to have received Baby Friendly accreditation status from the World Health Organization (WHO).
The WHO initiative recognises hospitals where staff promote early and exclusive breastfeeding, if possible, and encourage whole-family bonding by means of kangaroo mother care, or skin-to-skin contact.
