MEET WAYNE HENNIES

This ambitious young professional has advanced from a Basic Life Support paramedic to become ER24’s Limpopo Branch Manager. He is committed to ongoing learning to advance his career.

Why did you enter the profession?

Both my parents are in the medical field. My dad is the Emergency Centre Unit Manager at Mediclinic Paarl, and my mom is a theatre nurse at Mediclinic Durbanville. I always knew I would somehow end up in the same profession because it’s simply in my blood.

What keeps you engaged?

While qualifying as an Advanced Life Support (ALS) paramedic, I realised emergency medicine is not just about lights and sirens. It’s about a patient’s moment of distress. I find it very rewarding to know I can help – that’s what keeps me motivated and focused.

How have you advanced in your career?

After completing my studies for the Basic Life Support course through a different company, I applied to study the two-year Diploma in Emergency Medical Care at the ER24 Training Academy in Tygerpark, Cape Town. While working in a temporary position as an ALS in Cape Town, I was recruited by a former lecturer to work at the ER24 Limpopo branch. Within three years I became Branch Manager.

Are there opportunities for growth?

Yes. South Africa has a great need for skilled, qualified emergency care providers, and there are many opportunities for advancement if you’re dedicated and passionate. A commitment to patient care, professional integrity, and lifelong learning is key.

How does Mediclinic assist?

The Learning and Development department is very supportive, and I’ve already completed an International Trauma Life Support course, which focused on advanced lifesaving training for specific international treatment protocols. I’m now busy with a one-year online management course provided to ER24 by an outside company. It covers areas such as conflict management, disciplinary processes, staff management, and safety management for the crew.

How do you see your professional future?

I feel constantly challenged and see a bright future for myself within the company. I’d like to move into higher management but would also be happy returning to a full-time operational paramedic role. Mediclinic supports skills development, takes care of its employees and encourages you to grow and experience as much as possible through the company. I don’t ever want to limit myself as there are so many options and opportunities. It’s all about being able to grab what’s in front of you and make the most of it.
